Establishment:
The Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University, also known as Bhagalpur University, is a premier institution for providing higher education in the state of Bihar. The university is situated in Bhagalpur town of Bihar State in India and is named after famous freedom fighter Tilka Manjhi. Established on 12 July 1960, it is a public university sprawled within 264 acres of lush green campus ideal for teaching and learning. The university has 9 Faculties, 36 Teaching Departments, 5 Research Centres and 30 Constituent Colleges, besides affiliated to it 24 Colleges and 15 B.Ed. Colleges.
Location:
Tilkamanjhi Bhagalpur University is situated in the heart of historical ‘Silk City’ Bhagalpur. In ancient times it was known as Champa, the capital of ‘Anga’ ruled by Raja Karna of Mahabharat period. King Dharmpal of Pal dynasty established the Vikramshila University at a distance of 40 Km. East of Bhagalpur, whose excavated sites are visited by the tourists from all over the world. The historical Tilha Kothi, on the bank of holy river the Ganga, was the residence of the first collector of Bhagalpur. This property was later owned by Rabindra Nath Tagore and hence the University renamed the Tilha Kothi as Rabindra Bhawan. During freedom movement, Mahatma Gandhi had addressed the public of Bhagalpur from this place.
Campus:
The University campus is spread around Tilha Kothi (Rabindra Bhawan) between the railway track of the Eastern Railway and the holy Ganga. It is at a distance of 3km. west of Bhagalpur Railway junction. It has its own campus area of 246 acres with luxuriant mango & litchi orchards and a number of natural ponds and fields. The vast University area embraces different campus of P.G. Science, P.G. Arts, P.G. Commerce, T.N.B. College, Marwari College, B.N.College, University Health Centre, University Library, University Sports Stadium, University Auditorium, Multipurpose Hall and University Guest House, Hostels for Boys and residential Lalbag campus with hostels for girls.
The university harbours a sound academic ambience with its highly qualified and dedicated faculty staff to provide quality teaching and research in various disciplines of humanities, arts, social sciences and modern science. Great scientists of international repute like Prof. K.S. Bilgrami, Prof. J.S Datta Munshi and the famous poet and writer Padma Vibhshan Shri Ramdhari Singh Dinkar have served this university in various capacities.
